Sitting Too Long Can be Harmful to Your Health
How often are you sitting in front of a TV or computer screen? An American Cancer Society study found that women who sit for more than six hours a day were about 40% more likely to die during the course of the study than those who sat fewer than three hours per day. Men were about 20% more likely to die. Sitting can increase the risk of certain cancers, such as colon and lung cancer. Physically active people have just as much risk.
Weekly, regular exercise is unable to reverse the effects that sitting has on the body. Regardless of how good your working posture is, working in the same posture or sitting still for prolonged periods is not healthy. You should change your working position frequently throughout the day by making small adjustments to your chair or backrest. You can also stretch your fingers, hands, arms, and torso. Always make sure that you stand up and walk around for a few minutes periodically to reduce the number of hours you spend sitting. For more information on proper working positions, visit this site.
