Cincinnati Fresh Food Retail Financing Fund

The Cincinnati Fresh Food Retail Financing Fund is an innovative financing program created to increase the number of supermarkets, grocery stores, and other fresh food markets in low-income, underserved communities in the Cincinnati area. With funding from the City of Cincinnati, the Center for Closing the Health Gap and the Cincinnati Development Fund will operate the fund with the support of two national organizations, The Food Trust and Uplift Solutions.

The owner of corner store Jet-In in west Cincinnati joined the healthy food network and now offers fresh produce.

In Cincinnati, the Center for Closing the Health Gap began by addressing obesity at the neighborhood level. In some, such as Avondale, major grocery stores had closed leaving corner stores, gas stations and minimarts as the few places to buy food. Do Right!® Healthy Stores Campaign Expands

The Do Right!® Corner Store Network has expanded to the West End through a Greater Cincinnati Foundation grant. West End joins Avondale in addressing the city’s food deserts issue — Walnut Hills, Lower Price Hill, Northside, South Cumminsville/Millvale and Mt. Auburn will soon follow.

Jet-In (pictured right) entered the network in June after West End’s Food Outlet Assessment led by West End residents. Eight of the Health Gap’s planned 14 corner stores will be operational by the first quarter of 2014.
