In the United States, Black mothers are three times more likely to die and black babies are two times more likely to die than their white counterparts. Addressing racism and environmental and economic stressors are key strategies in combating infant mortality in the black community. Cleveland-based Birthing Beautiful Communities is a collection of birth workers of color who have stepped forward to change infant and maternal outcomes. The organization embraces a holistic approach that targets systemic disparities.
