African American Health: CDC Vital Signs Report

Problem: Young African Americans are living with diseases more common at older ages.Source: CDC

 

The Centers for Disease Control recently released their 2017 vital signs report on African American Health.

Here are a few highlights.

 The death rate for African Americans declined 25 percent between 1999 and 2015. (CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report)
 The health gap between black and whites are still sizeable. Black life expectancy is still nearly four years less than that of whites.
 The report also finds that blacks in their 20s, 30s, and 40s …

Today we educated 130 Hughes High School Students on how to Eat Right as part of their Intersession Day! They learned why each food group is important for your health, how to read the food label, portion control and how to choose healthy options on the go! They also participated in a fun activity that had them guessing the calorie content of oversized portions! It was a great time for everyone!

Our Block-by-Block Initiative is Expanding

The Do Right!® Block-by-Block Initiative, stemming from our previous Do Right! Campaign work, is an IRB-approved study which is a resident-led Block-by-Block lifestyle modification intervention. Beginning in Mt. Auburn with 15 pilot households in 2013, a focus on physical activity levels and dietary outcomes is emphasized, with recruitment in progress to implement expansion to 36 households. The Health Gap’s 5th Community Engagement Academy (CEA) is currently underway! Over 30 community members are in the process of being equipped with tools to become effective community leaders. Community Engagement is defined as the process of working collaboratively with groups of people affiliated by geography, special interests, or issues affecting their wellbeing. Men’s Health Conference with Oscar Robertson a Success

The Center for Closing the Health Gap hosted its first conference on black men’s health with featured guest Oscar Robertson on Saturday, November 9, 2013.

We had a great turnout for the event with more than 150 people. The day was full of inspirational moments where men were able to share concerns about their health in a safe place. The forum provided an eye-opening experience for attendees and speakers alike.

The Center for Closing the Health Gap announced today that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), the nation’s largest philanthropy devoted exclusively to health and health care, selected the organization by review committee as a presenting workshop partner at the Active Living Research (ALR) Annual Conference in San Diego on March 9, 2014.

Health Gap Joins National Sullivan Alliance

The Health Gap was asked to join the National Sullivan Alliance which is led by former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Dr. Louis W. Sullivan, M.D. (pictured right with Eric Porfeli, PH.D. from Northeast Medical University).

Dr. Sullivan formed The Sullivan Alliance to Transform the Health Professions in January 2005. This initiative includes six states working to strengthen the capacity and quality of the the numbers of ethnic and racial minorities within health professions.

Do Right!® Healthy Stores Campaign Expands

September 26, 2013

The Do Right!® Corner Store Network has expanded to the West End through a Greater Cincinnati Foundation grant. West End joins Avondale in addressing the city’s food deserts issue — Walnut Hills, Lower Price Hill, Northside, South Cumminsville/Millvale and Mt. Auburn will soon follow.

Jet-In (pictured right) entered the network in June after West End’s Food Outlet Assessment led by West End residents. Eight of the Health Gap’s planned 14 corner stores will be operational by the first quarter of 2014.

Second Act

We’ve experienced many momentum-building moments this year. We started with theestablishment of the Fresh Food Fund, which benefits our Do Right! Healthy Corner Store initiative. We then welcomed a record-breaking crowd to the 10th Annual Health Expo. In June, we joined the effort to lower high infant mortaility rates in Cincinnati.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Commission to “Build a Healthier America” met in Washington, D.C. on June 19, 2013 to hear testimony from leading experts on how best to support health in communities and health during early childhood. Eight experts from across the country provided testimony to the commission.

NEWS: INFANT MORTALITY REDUCTION COLLABORATIVE FORMS: Health Gap joins, 6/13

Cincinnati health organizations, hospitals and city leaders along with the Health Gap formed a collaborative dedicated to decreasing Cincinnati infant mortality rates to below average rates in five years.

Currently, the mortality rate among infants in some Cincinnati populations is three times the national average.
