Taft Lecture Series Welcomes Howard W. French

Howard W. French is a professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. He is also a former foreign correspondent and senior writer for The New York Times, having worked as a bureau chief in China, Japan, West and Central Africa, and Central America and the Caribbean.
During the talk, he will draw from his two most recent books, Born in Blackness: Africa, Africans, and the Making of the Modern World, 1471 to the Second World War (2021), and The Second Emancipation: Nkrumah, Pan-Africanism, and Global Blackness at High Tide (2025). Books will be available to purchase on-site for the book signing.
Funded by The Charles P. and Eleanor Taft Memorial Fund, the Taft Lecture Series features provocative thinkers, writers, teachers, theologians, social justice activists, and leaders in the fields of religion, social science, the arts, politics, and more. This fall, we welcome Howard W. French to share his wisdom with us.
