Upcoming Mental Health Event to Kick Off Black History Month

The City of Cincinnati, alongside The Center for Closing the Health Gap and The Beauty and Balance Spot, is sponsoring Just Heal Bro, a national Black male mental health tour. The tour addresses the uptick of depression and suicide rates in the Black community and promotes connecting Black men in support of mental health education, healing and brotherhood.

“It’s important to have difficult conversations and to shine a light on a topic that too often goes ignored,” said City Manager Sheryl M.M. Long. “That’s why the City is engaging in this strategic partnership during Black History Month to not only recognize the mental health strains of men in the Black community, but to provide resources and talk about ways to address the stigma moving forward.”

“Mental health for all is a crisis in our country, but especially so for Black men. In fact, less than half of all Americans with a mental disorder get the treatment they need. But the proportion of Black Americans who need mental health treatment and actually get it is only half that of whites. So much of this struggle is about access to information and encouraging Black men to feel comfortable asking for help. That’s why this partnership is so important,” said Renee Mahaffey Harris, President/CEO of The Center for Closing the Health Gap.
